Description: Ballrog is a fine duo from Norway featuring Klaus Ellerhusen Holm on alto sax & bass clarinet and Roger Arntzen on double bass. Roger Arnstzen plays bass in the great Norwegian band In the Country, who have two fine discs out on the Rune Grammofon label. Roger recently stopped by (4/7/08) and left us with copies of his duo disc under the name of Ballrogg. Only 3 of their 10 tracks are originals, they do perform some impressive versions of songs by Ornette Coleman (2 cuts), Eric Dolphy (4 tracks) and Jimmy Giuffre. Ornette's "Sex Spy" opens with a most lovely and laid-back version. Klaus' tone is especially warm and exquisitely played. Bassist Roger Arntzen is a perfect foil with an equally luscious and enchanting tone. The duo performs two songs from Eric Dolphy's classic 'Out to Lunch' album. The title track features some superb, haunting bass clarinet from Klaus, while "Hat and Beard" is done in a most spirited way. Klaus' alto sax is often joyous and he does sounds like Dolphy at times. On "Emphasis," his alto tone is sublime with some equally tender acoustic bass. This song was written by the great Jimmy Giuffre and it does capture his superb, contemplative vibe. Considering that this is merely just a duo, they are well-matched and consistently inspired throughout. Superbly recorded as well. - BLG
