Artist: GRID MESH [FRANK PAUL SCHUBERT/ANDREAS WILLERS/RUDI FISCHERLEHNER]
Title: Coordinates
Label: FMR 282 Country: UK
Format: CD Status: AVAILABLE $16.00
Description: With Frank Schubert on alto & soprano sax, Andreas Willers on electric guitar & devices and Rudi Fischerlehner on drums & percussion. I know guitarist Andreas Willers through his work with Gebhard Ullamnn, Enrico Rava, Louis Sclavis and Paul Bley, as well as his own discs on various European labels like Enja, Leo, Nabel & FMP. I do recall a fine Hendrix tribute disc that Willers had many years back. I can't say that I was familiar with Mr. Schubert or Mr. Fischerlehner before getting this disc.
This disc was recorded at the Loft in Cologne, Germany in June of 2009 and it has excellent sound. This is some incredible improv - often eerie, extremely focused and consistently engaging. The magic of improv is that when it works, it evokes images, tells a story and takes you along for a fascinating ride. This is what we have here. The way these players work together is tight and crafty. It sounds as if they have been playing together for a long while, since they anticipate each other so well. Even when the sax or guitar are soloing, there is always spirited interaction going on around them. If you need some proof that this is one of the best dates of the year, just check out "The Newt", only six & a half minutes and an outstanding example of improv at its best. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
